This makes problems when you try to access the shared folders on the pc with windows 7 from another computer with a previous version of windows. Did this solve your problem? Sorry this didn't help. The following looks like a long story it is only words.
I do not know what the user's overall knowledge is, and what exactly was already done. Thus the info goes through the motions of configuring and checking most of the common aspects of Windows OS' LAN features.
All aspects should be checked, stating that it "worked before" , or perseverating on "I did Not do any thing ", is not a way to deal with current Sharing problems. Win7 when configured on peer-to-peer Network has three types of Sharing configurations.
This type of configuration makes it very easy to Entry Level Users to start Network sharing. For best results log to each computer's System Screen and set all the computers to be on a Network with the same name while each computer has its own unique name.

This time I was able to assign the ownership to the administrator then my username, then I was able to take change control of the key. That's as far as I went before the sandman got me. I'll see how the rest of it goes shortly.
Does it go in the start up file? That little "hammer" icon at the bottom sure comes in handy. I downloaded and ran Dial-A-Fix as noted above but was not able to make permission changes that would stick.
I would pick the checkbox for full control, hit apply, then ok thinking it worked. Reentering the permission window would show no changes. What I found is that your username needs to have ownership of the key to make permission changes.

Right click on the key? You will get a message that states you do not have permission to make changes but that you can change your permission level. Right click on the key again. The permission window will open. If your username or administrator does not appear in the upper window, click on add.
In the next window type in your username or administrator Whatever you are logged in as. Click search for names. It should replace the name you typed in with the server name and your user name.
Highlight your username, click advanced at the bottom of the window. You should now be at a window with several tabs across the top. Back at the first permission window now. Highlight your username then click the full control checkbox.
Click apply, then ok. The install software that has been giving me problems is now making progress. At least up to where it finds another key to choke on. What I am not sure if is if Dial-A-Fix made this process possible.
Maybe someone can confirm this. I still have a ways to go before everything is fixed. Like, my printer driver not working. But that is for another thread. After trying to reinstall software and getting permission denied but no key listing I decided to try a bigger bat.
Found a website that had a routine for the switches for subinACL. Lost most of the desktop, the toolbar, the internet, just about everything. Couldn't get to regedt32 since the toolbar wouldn't work, couldn't get to command either.

Revo not only detects what's on your computer, but does a better job of completely cleaning out old software than anything else we know. I use it on the most aggressive of it's settings, and it's quick and I've never had a problem with it.

For anyone who wants to see what one of these scams looks like there is a video here of when a MalwareBytes security researcher got cold called and played along with one, and recorded it all.
The original poster Mainman did not get cold called. He initiated the call but I suspect he searched for a phone number and got the 'wrong' one. I did a similar google search after reading the OP, and the very first hit that was not Piriform gave a prominent contact number.
Must be a good company if they are doing tech support for all these major players. It can't be nice to be caught out like that, which is one reason I posted a link to that video so hopefully ohers won't get caught.
Thing is with data breaches that expose customer data, such as from a PC manufacturer can give hackers a long list to sell off to scammers, then they have your name, address, phone number, email, and even the PC model you own.

Lately, every time I downloaded and tried to install 'Giveawayoftheday' or any other, I received this message, "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file.
You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item. I can't even access CCleaner as though my own computer don't recognized I'm the administrator! Fortunately, I'm still able to access some. I've browse all over the Internet looking for the remedy but nothing so far can solve my problem.
I know about taking ownership but in my case it didn't work. To find out more, I try to open Belarc, but I got the dreaded message instead. I guess that's it. Don't think WinPatrol considered as a Firewall. Don't know if this is any connection, but I had some major problems with various things when I installed SP3 for my XP.
I've since deleted that and just have SP If it does, it's something else. If it doesn't, that means that somehow the Temp folder is locked and you'll need to try to unlock it. ArahMan, my impression is that you may have a problem with Acess Control List corruption.
I assume you know what these are - master lists of file permissions. This can be a major problem in Vista, I don't know about XP, hadn't thought it was much of a problem there. Two things come to mind. One, I don't know if you've checked the permissions tab in your properties box for some of these files - if you have the permissions tab enabled.
If things like CCleaner. I'm assuming you're up on your virus scanning, because malware is one of the ways this happens. The other thing you can try is creating a new account with Administrator privileges.
Then, if things work in the new account that don't work in the old, that's a tip off that you've got this type of permission corruption. Often, creating a new account is the only way short of reinstalling to correct a permissions corruption problem.
Of course, you'll have to migrate settings, amd maybe even reinstall software for the new account. However, from one Administrator account to another, none of that may be necessary. In any case, you can then delete the damaged account if you want.
Though creating a new account doesn't work every time it's worth a try and also a good way to test. One of my sparse but major headaches. Usually, if you try to access the affected entry, you'll get an access denied message, and no one, not even SYSTEM can get into it.
They only way I've managed to fix it is by deleting the file's parent folder in Linux, as the file's entry itself doesn't exist properly. When do you see the message? Unzipping, immediately after running Setup. If that's the case, we wouldn't want you to be in any sort of trouble, would we?
Here's how I do it suffice by showing this page, How to take ownership of a file. It's already past 3am over here, I shall try changing my account later. Before I'm off to bed, do you think it got to do with some.
You see I was uninstalling a software I'm using Your Uninstaller the other day. Might it be possible during the course some important. And no, 'System Restore' not working either. I tried to restore my computer to an earlier time but it failed.
On Giveawayoftheday case, I'm able to download the app but when I click to install, I got the dreaded message. I'd think that it's a virus infection of some sort. Have you tried safe mode?
F8 just before Windows' start logo displays. About the "things that I cannot tell you", I can't tell you. But let's just say that the wrapper uses the Temp folder and you can access it, and we don't need to talk further on that matter ;.
This doesn't has to be an odd case Well, I may have misunderstood ArahMan, Robert. He said he couldn't open CCleaner, either, which made me suspicious. Certrainly, if he's made a change in one of his security programs recently, I agree, I'd check that first.
As to taking ownership, there can be more to it. The method Microsoft cites is not always effective. Also, there's more to ACL corruption than just ownership. I'll post more on that in a bit, when I refind a link on that I want to post.
But, I agree, it could be something simple and I'd start there first. I'd definitely retrace my steps concerning any recent changes I'd made that might have caused this. And there's no reason any security software should block.
GMMan Only a possible cause I mentioned. Some security software over here however does ask permission to launch tmp files running wrapped setup exes and whenever unknown new programs try to access temp or other files.
Yeah GM, some of the actual setups do create temps, depending on the developer, so that could still be relevant. Other people have reported the temp folder problem with certain GOTDs, so messed up temp folder permissions have been shown to cause it.
ArahMan, I retract what I said about a different method to take ownership. Double checking myself, I think the problem I was going to post about is unique to Vista. Assuming that you have actually looked at the "Security" tab I don't why I called it "Permissions" tab.
My brain must have short circuited. But if you haven't, I recommend you check that. In any case, making a new account still might be a relatively painless way to test it. There easy to make and delete. I made a backup account just in case this ever happens to me.
Like I said, it is a documented problem in Vista.

Setup CCleaner to Automatically Run Each Night in Windows 7, Vista or XP. by Lowell Heddings on July 25th, After writing the article yesterday about how to run CCleaner silently through a shortcut or a hotkey, many people expressed to me that they’d like to know how to run it every single night on a schedule, so I’m writing that up.
