You can't brick it by installing an OS, just make sure to backup important files on an external drive before doing anything and you are safe. It should come with a browser installed. You can use it like a normal computer, test it out, see how it works, its just nothing you do will be saved unless you do something to the hard drive.

You could even unplug your harddrive if you're that worried. I'm sure you'll be okay if you're careful though. Though it's better if you install the TOR browser and use that be sure you don't resize the window and don't install addons there, leave it as it is.

For the rest you don't have to install stuff because other people do. Do you need a browser? Do you need an image editor? I am rapidly moving away from Windows to Linux, but my wife has a laptop with 8.
