For those who use its many features, I think the product is great and has a bright future. It has so many similarities to Photoshop and strong compatibility with Adobe file formats that most people should be pleasantly surprised at how smooth a transition can be.
However, I've seen people criticise it because it does more than they need it to do. The same people would criticise Formula 1 cars for being too fast. Some people, for reasons I can't quite fathom, are rather heavily emotionally invested in paying rent to Adobe.

It must be difficult for Adobe to keep pressing on with updates for products that they are getting paid for through subscription, regardless of what they add to them. They have some good products, but over the past few years, most of the "innovation" is about technologies to tie the customer into the Adobe ecosystem.
When Adobe trumpets an update that makes it easier to use their "cloud" based licensing, i see a win for Adobe, not me. Gimp isn't an experience I want to try again ;- I don't care if it's free. Wasted time costs me money.
Interesting what you say about people preferring Affinity to Photoshop. I have worked with Photoshop for so long the transition is painful, but I feel it needs to be done. I cannot envisage a future of having to work with a subscription paid application that can be switched off at their discretion.
Again, GIMP, great respect for those who work on the GIMP project and for those who produce quality work with it, but unfortunately I also find it uncomfortable to work with. I thought a lot of the tools and shortcuts from Photoshop are carried over well by Affinity.
The things that differ are generally things that I have come to like better in Affinity. There are a couple of areas of Affinity Photo that I haven't quite warmed to. The Tone Mapping persona is one that I personally haven't been able to get good results from.

I think in truth Affinity was born out of the need that many people had to escape the Adobe monopoly. If Adobe had retained a non-subscription option as they promised I doubt this program would ever have been developed.
Affinity already has Photo and Designer. Publisher, has been announced, and will be available next year. They are already talking about Database, but with no timeline. If it get in the way of Adobe - Then Adobe will buy Affinity.
Its a simple fact that Adobe dislikes any true competition and just buys them if they become a thread. Actually they had quite a bit of a problem before. The Federal Trade Commission blocked the sale of Freehand for many years.

I use 1 inch and smaller sensors in my cameras so good noise reduction for the RAW files is very important to me. I usually use photoshop but even then prefer to use third party noise reduction plugins.
The plugins I use also work with Affinity. You can use Google Nik Collection plugins now with this new version. It has a very nice noise reduction plugin. I've been happy enough with the noise reduction in Adobe Camera Raw. I'm happy with the sharpening too and I always prefer to sharpen and reduce noise at the same time because they each effect each other.
That's why I hope Affinity Photo does a great job with noise reduction and sharpening. The whole RAW processing has me real curious and I'm hoping to get some opinions on that. For forty bucks I'm real tempted to purchase it and find out for myself.
Affinity out-performs the Adobe offering. It's the learning curve that hurts! About time slower as PS CS6. It renders the stuff in the develop per "square". In practice the only difference is using the "export as" command rather than the "save as" command to initially change the format.
Actually, Affinity can open a layered Tiff and "Save" as tiff as well. Which good for DAM integration. Especially when you open the tiff from your DAM. However, for other document, using "export" instead of "Save As..

If you don't like something, or want something added, there is a good chance that it will be added if it makes sense to a lot of users.
They do tend to add tons of new features with each release. Try that with Adobe. I was getting a corporate "solution" customised by Adobe earlier in the year and they wouldn't consider the most basic features.

Learned by following the Affinity videos online. Bought it as soon as it came out. It was exactly what I needed. Look at the preferences in Affinity Photo under Photoshop Plugins where to find the plugin directory.
You can also link to installed Photoshop plugins there if you use Photoshop. It worked for me. If you have photoshop installed you can simply add the photoshop plugin folder to affinity under preferences - plugins-add.
I also have issues when using the ProPhoto color profile. When Adobe RGB is used, it's ok. It's not the best way to edit but it's better than nothing. I do like this app, the plugin support is much improved for things like Topaz.

Well PaintShop isn't really raw extraction software--yes I know it can sort of do raw extraction. Unless you use both it is very difficult to say. I'm content with both. My main interest in Affinity is as an alternative to the similarly priced PaintShop Pro.
I use the latest version X9 and like it, but the buzz around Affinity makes me think that I may be missing out on something better. There was a beta version available not a trial. A trial version is available for the Mac, the Windows trial will come later.
I guess they just wanted to get the non-beta Windows version out as soon as possible. Affinity has lots and lots of tutorials on Vimeo. They also use non-Abobe naming conventions. When going from Adobe products to Affinity software, there is a learning curve.
I read below of someone that had less than acceptable results with the Shadow and Highlights adjustments, which I also tend to use big time. So perhaps I'll take a pass and hope On1 fixes their program to work better with the X-T2.

While Capture NX understandably produced excellent results, given Nikon's development involvement, the differences between it and Capture One were negligible. So, the choice was easy in the end. I know of C1, but ACR is more flexible and convenient.
Affinity Raw developer is like pushing a jpeg. I was very surprised when using the beta. Much slower than Lightroom. Also, nothing like Bridge. You have to open individual images. I'd say the it's as much a competitor for Photoshop as Lightroom.
Affinity Photo also does more general photo editing, compositing, etc. I haven't noticed it being slow at all on a Mac. Lightroom was intended as a more accessible way for photographers to do things that they did in Photoshop using layers and effects.
It was also promoted as a RAW development environment. These days, we are spoiled for choice. Affinity Photo seems, from my own testing, to be a highly capable application. It appears to be designed to keep the things that work with current popular apps while being innovative elsewhere.
Adobe is certainly not the only show in town for photographers. I never use Bridge these days. Affinity Photo is more than capable of replacing Photoshop on projects I have worked on recently. It was never meant to be a Lightroom replacement.
It's aimed at Photoshop users - which is a far bigger user group than just Photographers. It is great too see that there is a new option for non-subscription software for Windows that does not cost an arm and a leg.

If I'm interested in software the first thing I do is open up a blank tab and google for it - most software, and Affinity is no exception, will provide you with an abridged marketing versions of its key features, and then a more comprehensive rundown on a separate page should you wish to read more.

Please do check out some of the video tutorials on raw processing like this one: There's plenty of scope to maximise the tonal range and highlights recovery, but don't expect a 1: You can disable the tone curve application, bring the highlights down and apply your own custom tone curve - it's quite powerful.

I did get it to come up once somehow, but I can't repeat it. Rich, this is because you're in the Develop persona when you open a raw file, not the Photo persona. You basically develop your raw image first before you go on to do further edits.

Are you on Windows? I'll have to check if they're successfully being applied. I have tested some files in the Windows version but cannot see any problem. Are you referring to problems with the beta version? Yes windows the final beta.
I noticed the photo I opened in it had more view-able area than the same file loaded in Lightroom. I assumed this is because Lightroom recognizes the correction profile include with the RAW data correction and the edge cropping applied automagically.
I then went to their forums, assuming I just wasn't aware of a setting or something, but the response I saw to others with the same issue lead me to believe they didn't really understand and never followed up on the questions besides saying no we don't support that.
Plus the fact that I can see more of my image because it's not corrected and cropped is kind of obvious. I'll try it with more images, maybe it's a just a fluke. Besides that I really like it, especially the price but of course haven't bought it considering my issue at hand.
